In search of a new name
In 1997 the Peter de Grote Festival was founded, as a collaboration between the conservatoires of Groningen and St. Petersburg. 1997 was the year of Peter de Grote, The Netherlands and Russia celebrated the visit of Peter to the Netherlands, exactly 300 years ago. These facts resulted in the name of our festival.
The last decades the festival has become a more international festival with participants and musicians from all over the world. The collaboration with the Conservatoire of St. Petersburg disappeared and the festival was wondering if there would be a new name that would be more suitable.
The recent developments in the Ukraine have urged this process. Tsar Peter the Great stands in a tradition of authoritarian Russian rulers. We firmly disagree with this kind of behavior and the population of Ukraine is in our thoughts. We believe in freedom, liberty and peace, not in war, violence and suppression.
So, we are looking for a new name for the festival. Do you have a suggestion? Please let us know in the comments below, before April 1st. Or send it to: info@peterdegrotefestival.nl.
This summer the festival will take place from July 20th - 30th, when we will celebrate our 25th birthday! In May he program (and the new name) will be presented.
We hope to see you all in the summer!
