Sonam Duo
Juan Pablo Vega started his percussion studies at the National Institute of Music of Costa Rica, obtaining his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance and Teaching with a specialization in Percussion in 2021. In 2022 he moved to The Prins Claus Conservatorium, in The Netherlands, to continue with his studies in percussion. Currently, Juan Pablo is studying his Master´s degree. Juan Pablo, during his career as a musician, has participated in music festivals as Sewanee Summer Music Festival, Sewanee Winter Festival and PASIC in the United States, and FIM in Valencia, Spain. As a professional musician Vega has played as a soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica after winning the concourse “Young Soloists” in 2019. Also, he has been playing as a guest musician with the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica since 2018. In 2023, after winning the position for the academy, Juan Pablo has played with the Noord Nederlands Orkest around The Netherlands. Additionally, he has been invited to play with the Kamerorkest van Het Noorden in Groningen.
Maria Navarro graduated at the Conservatori Superior Salvador Seguí de Castelló, Spain, and currently she is in the final stages of a master's degree in classical music at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen, with professor Egbert Jan Louwerse. In the chamber music field, Maria is nowadays focused on Sonam Duo, a project with percussionist Juan Pablo Vega, with the aim to promote and share Latin American music culture, history and heritage. Recently, she initiated an internship at the Noord Nederlands Orkest, where she had the opportunity of playing emblematic repertoire and learn with the principal flautist Francesco Gatti. In 2022, she became an academist of the Orchestra of the Americas, which allowed her to work with teachers and conductors all around the world. Additionally, she received training from great flutists such as Josephine Olech, Silvia Careddu, Martin Belič, Jeannette Landré, Paco Varoch, Vicent Morelló, Joan Ibañez, and José Ananias among others. Besides her academic training she has been a flute and music teacher.
