Julius Backer

Julius studied at the Sweelinck Academy for Young Talent at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under Marcel Baudet. Four years later, Julius moved to the United Kingdom to continue his piano studies with the same teacher at the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin School of Music in London. Currently, he is studying with Claudio Martinez-Mehner and Nina Tichman at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne.

He has attended masterclasses by artists such as Alexander Melnikov, Arie Vardi, Jan Wijn, and Robert D. Levin. As a prize winner of various competitions, Julius has performed in most major concert halls in the Netherlands, including the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and Tivoli Vredenburg in Utrecht, as well as in various venues in the United Kingdom and Germany.

Together with the talented mezzo-soprano Roza Herwig, Julius forms a successful lied duo. They give theatrical concerts and have performed at venues such as the Muziekgebouw aan het IJ, Kunst in de Kamer, on the TV program Podium Klassiek, and at various festivals. Julius is also part of the Backer Trio, an ensemble formed with his two sisters: clarinetist Paulien Backer and violinist Vera Backer. As a trio, they have been awarded prizes at the Prinses Christina Concours and perform concerts throughout the Netherlands.
